Greetings,
Current download stats for PEAR template engines:
HTML_Template_IT: 59,577
HTML_Template_Xipe: 21,420
HTML_Template_Sigma: 19,318
HTML_Template_PHPLIB: 17,014
HTML_Template_Flexy: 7,565
I don't see any engine dying from lack of attention, I don't see hordes of mythical "confused users" complaining about the number of template engines in PEAR. But I do see that our role model template engine is the one least downloaded by real PEAR users.
On an "official PEAR template engine". Last time I checked (around PHP version 4.3.6), a specific template engine (HTML_Template_IT) was bundled with PHP's installation. Are there any plans to unbundle it?
For those working on common interface / base class / whatever for templates, I'd like to propose the following test.
HTML_QuickForm is able to use 4 template engines for its output (ITX or Sigma, Smarty, Flexy) via customized renderers. I challenge the developers of the Grand Unified Template with the following: write a renderer for QuickForm that will use only the methods available in this interface / base class / whatever and that will be able to output the form through any of the template engines you decide to support.
