I got to disagree on that point. A PHP5 package could on itself be interesting without the user specially interested in, or knowning the ins and outs of PHP5. The interest is in what the package does for the user, not that's it's a PHP5 package.
Yes, but I think David's point was that if they have a PHP5 system then they know how to use PHP5 -- and Exceptions are a pretty big part of PHP5. What you're saying sounds a little like "Someone may want to buy a car because they know it's fast & fuel efficient, even though they don't know how to drive." :) It's not really worth debating over, since I don't think anyone really believes that PEAR packages should be made simpler so that novice developers can understand them.
I can easily imagine when PHP5 will have a noticeable installed base, most users will continue to use it as PHP4. So the only way to go is educating users with easy example on how to use packages that throw errors...
Oh yeah, it'll only take a few E_FATAL errors to learn this lesson ;) But in general, I couldn't agree more. There need to be some good docs on this -- both for users and for developers. Is there a wiki for PEAR now? Seems like a good place to start... Cheers, Hans
