It sounds like this time you should re-read David's post. His statement was that exceptions are already a part of PHP5 and his example was that SQLite will throw an exception if you try to connect & it fails. Ergo, people using SQLite in PHP5 need to know how to catch exceptions.
That was exactly my point. I just tried to demonstrate that the argument "we should use exceptions with care because PHP 5 users and developers don't know how to catch them" is flawed.
Ok, then I am sorry for overinterpreting your post. You are right: exceptions are a reality users have to cope with if they plan to use php5.
No need to be sorry, perhaps my argument wasn't sufficiently clear and I am glad it is now. For the record (and once again) I have nothing against PEAR_ErrorStack we just have to think that PHP 5 only packages are so rare that for the time being it might not make a lot of sense to port it to PHP 5. We could perhaps wait PHP 5 stable, see how things change and let the few PHP 5 only developers now to chose among PEAR_Exceptions and any other alternative if that is the case. So I am not saying that Exceptions are the only way to go but we might not want to rush into some rules imposing boundaries at this early stage. Today they are to me the natural way to handle errors on PHP 5 and PEAR_Exceptions does a good job in providing an initial common ground to handle them properly. One more thing : the documentation on Exceptions in both Zend.com and PHP.net is really minimal but I do think that it will improve as soon as PHP 5 goes stable. Cheers David Costa
