Hosnestly I don't a company paying the developers to rewrite a working application from PHP4 to PHP5, try to sell that :) The College where I teach has just completed a migration (of course I strongly advocated this move) of all the production servers (3) from PHP 4 to PHP 5.We have paid a number of people to rewrite working application from PHP 4 to PHP 5 and albeit 99.9% of the PHP 4 works on the new PHP 5 servers (E_STRICT off) the best solution is to rewrite them in PHP 5. I think every company is looking to have a competitive technology and the "it works" mindset is not always the best one. Of course my example doesn't reflect the majority of companies out there but it is certainly possible to have a company willing to migrate for performance benefits (and these are very relevant).
That put aside PHP4 is going to stick around for a while so the situation where PHP4/PHP5 packagesa re going to live together must be thought of. I am not totally sure on this point. All I have seen so far are PHP 5 only package or PHP 4 only packages so in my opinion the developers which are happy with their PHP 4 package will not start porting it to PHP 5 anytime soon. On the contrary they will just wait as much as they can. Just my feeling.Regards David Costa
