Indeed, this does look very nice. It would also be useful (IMHO) to be able to monitor non-network services, such as cron. This would, of course, require running a script or daemon on the machine, but it would be very useful.
Hi Justin, Glad you like it. I agree that a package to monitor system service would also be very useful. However, I don't think it necessarily belongs in Net_Monitor. I think it would be better suited to a companion package called System_Monitor. By keeping Net_Monitor focused on network services monitoring, the package remains operating system independent. System_Monitor routines would necessarily have to be operating system dependent. Also, the implementation details for a system service monitoring package would be quite different than the details of Net_Monitor, which is essentially a wrapper package to interface with a variety of existing Pear network service client packages (like Net_FTP). The one useful commonality I could see between Net_Monitor and System_Monitor would be the alerting mechanisms. However, given that the project only currently encompasses SMTP and SMS, I don't think spawning off a Network_Alert package to service Net_Monitor and System_Monitor with a common API is really justified (yet). Thanks for the feedback! Best, Robert
