It just needs the build infrastructure (autoconf, etc.) so that
it can operate independently.
I plan on migrated some of my PEAR contributions (namely, the
Log:: class) to the /pear tree in the very near future (it's
getting closer to the top of my list... <g>).

That sounds like the sound thing to do, being PEAR and PHP are
now moving at different paces.
