Yes, this "bugfix" is a really BC break, so they decided to throw out 4.4 and not 4.3.x.
no .. its 4.4 instead of 4.3.x due to breaking binary compatibility. This is considered to be a bugfix and not a BC break. The motivation is simple: fix memory corruption issues. PHP traditionally had to care little about memory corruption issues, since PHP was mostly used for very short lived, simple requests. As a result alot of internal uglyness was either accepted or not even noticed. However this is causing major headaches to people using PHP in more complex environments. Even worse its hard to debug and even harder to fix in userland. At the same time fixing the resulting issues, while potentially tedious is much more doable and the right thing (tm) for the future. regards, Lukas
