Gentoo also uses it's own portage-system to and install pear-packages to
realize dependencies to web-applications...
Don't know what's the advantage, maybe Sebastian Bergmann can reply to
this, as far as I know he's involved in the php-herd in Gentoo and
maintains the pear-packages there...
