So this is an information only thing then? It only displays
extraFields for crossLinks which are currently connected?

No, this is not for information only, but the purpose is just to bring better experience for the end-user.
This option is useful only if every connection MUST exist.
So instead of having to checkin all the checkboxes to make the connection, these checkboxes are replaced by hidden fields, which means that when the form is submitted, every possible connections are created (or updated).
In my example in the last email, every product is available in any zone, so in the resulting products form , instead of checking each line and fill the price field, you just have to fill the price field for each zone, the connection checkbox is made invisible and checked.
