One word of caution: for every single request to xmlrpc.php, the same
must be done with 4-5 requests for REST files. To get a really accurate
picture, the best thing is to track downloads of package files by the
PEAR installer. The stats page does not do that because I don't want to
drag down the server with my cron job :), and I really only want to
track trend data here. Note that the stats page doesn't track PHP
5.2.x, so we are losing some data there.
It shows a clear trend from December when I started tracking to now:
December:
PHP 5.1.x was already the most popular PHP version, and PHP 5 users
outnumbered PHP 4 users 1.5:1. PHP 5.1 users outnumbered PHP 5.0 users
about 1.4:1
PEAR 1.4.x had already been adopted at greater than 96% (worst was 96.02%)
Now:
PHP 5.1.x is by far the most popular version, outnumbering all other
versions 1.7:1. PHP 5.0.x is basically dead (thank GOD) as far as PEAR
is concerned. There are still about 40 accesses by PHP 4.2, but they've
upgraded to PEAR 1.4.x.
PEAR 1.4.x is adopted at 99.66% over all PHP versions.
This basically means the following:
You can safely stop using package.xml 1.0 altogether.
Soon, you can safely use PHP 5.1.x+ for all packages, not just new ones.
