Quoting Lukas Kahwe Smith <mls@pooteeweet.org>:
I think it should be discouraged, at any rate it could ship with reasonable defaults, but with a token surrounding so that it could still be replaced at install time and also to make it possible for the unzip and go guys to find potential trouble spots. If you're going to discourage php-bin, you are basically saying that PEAR shouldn't be used to distribute/write command line scripts - like phpDocumentor, as previously mentioned. There is no way that I know of to put variables inside of a hash-bang line that will work, and while on most *nix systems you could have this: #!/usr/bin/env php .. and have it work, that doesn't help people with PHP installed outside of their $PATH, and it completely leaves out windows users.
But I do not think it makes sense to have different packages for different target groups. No, which is why we want to do the PHP-BIN replacement at install time. Right? -chuck
