Quoting Alexey Borzov <borz_off@cs.msu.su>:
While Zend does have a Zend_Loader class, they also use require_once throughout the code and rely on include_path setting. Which leads us to the question whether the problems with those are greatly exaggerated: folks at Zend probably do have a clue.I'm not so sure they're greatly exaggerated, given the number of people I've helped on IRC of late with include_path issues; it seems to be a particular banana skin for Windows users and people on shared hosting. (It's not helped by the usual allergy that many people have to reading manuals, of course.) Hardly scientific, I'm aware, but I don't think we can just assume that it all works out for the best with the current include_path reliant approach, because I'm not convinced it always does. I wonder if an approach involving a mandatory include in the base PEAR directory that calls set_include_path appropriately based on dirname(__FILE__) and _perhaps_ includes a loader might not be such a bad idea, since that would help both categories to some extent.
