Hi ya all, I want to start a discussion about something I've had on my mind for some time, actually ever since the group was talking about if pear2 should be named something else or not. Now I'm writing to the list as a developer, not as a group member so don't take this as official business but a start to a hopefully fruitful thread :) Now what I mean by renaming PEAR to pear is that we'd be dropping the acronym that PEAR stands for today and simply name the project pear, with no extra meaning what so ever. Now for those that don't know what PEAR stands for, it's PHP Extension and Application Repository... and well now if you think about it, we don't have extensions anymore, PECL handles that and well application, have we ever been keen on accepting those ? ;) In the past we've for fun on irc pondered if we could create a new acronym and we found some pretty interesting things but all in all, where's the gain ? People already know the project as pear and not by the long name so we wouldn't really be throwing anything away. Oh yeah just in case someone is following the gnome community at any rate, a post on the gnome planet kicked me in the ass to finally write this post, where a person suggests that GNOME should be named gnome and the acronym would be dropped, FYI, GNOME = GNU Object Model Environment and well like in our case their acronym doesn't really apply anymore :) Anyway I just want to get the discussion rolling, give people something to chew on if you like and see what everyone thinks, it's better to finish that before we even think about putting it into a public vote ;) Regards Helgi
