Check out the code in PEAR_Runtest->system_with_timeout(), it uses a PHP5+ proc_get_status call to retrieve the return code. The problem I was having with proc_open() calling a non-existent php interpreter. The other return code stuff works great.I would have to look over my commit logs to remember exactly what the issue was, but the "standard" way wasn't reliable for me. I tried the proc_get_status(), but it would randomly return -1 on files that were exiting with random integers between 100 and 200 so I relied on piping the exit status. It was on an Ubuntu install using the dotdeb packages, in OSX they were fine so it could have been a package issue. -T
