Although I do find 85 not a lot ( I think I tend to break lines at a 100-110 chars..) would it make sense to only start counting from the first character (so don't count the indents?)
No it wouldn't - then we'd just have a "sliding window" of lines no more than 80-85 characters in width excluding leading spaces - depending on the level of indentation you could very quickly get past the 100-110 characters at which you state you break your lines of code. It's best to be consistent regarding setting Coding Standards and allowing for such a "sliding window" imho means there would be anything but that.
Preach the Word, Ken. :-) I too think the "sliding window" is to be avoided. -- Paul M. Jones http://paul-m-jones.com/
