I've tested it under Linux, what OS do you have?
See that part of the code of "go-pear" (you can download it and run it
locally):
# ask for a directory
read destdir < /dev/tty
# no directory given, fallback to default /usr/local/lib/php
if [ ! $destdir ]; then
destdir=/usr/local/lib/php
fi
# assert the directory does exist or die
if [ ! -d $destdir ]; then
echo "Directory '$destdir' does not exit"
exit -1
fi
If you can do some debug (just with some 'echo "($destdir)"') I would be
able to catch the problem.
