Stupid me shouldn't work right after getting up from bed :-(.
/usr/local/lib/php was a symbolic link to some other directory
on my system. It now seems to work.
BTW: I'm not sure, if /usr/bin/pear should be the default
location for the PEAR "binary": Working in /usr/bin will
require root access on a lot of machines and there are a
lot of people who don't have root access (but normal shell
access) on their machines.
