thanks for the pointer. install -Z worked. I am using php 5.2.9 . I think, there is an issue with zlib. Is there a simple way to enable logging within pear to find out exactly which call is causing this hang. I did some basic debugging (using gdb and truss) and it seems to me that zlib is not recognizing the 'end of file' for some reason. Would like to know why though.Hmm this should be fixed in 5.2.9. The problem I fixed relating to this exact issue was in http://svn.php.net/viewvc/php/php-src/branches/PHP_5_2/ext/zlib/zlib_filter.c?r1=252812&r2=267184 which was on Oct 11, 2008. This was in PHP 5.2.9. I wonder if you could try out PHP 5.2.8 to see if the fix has a bug? I see your patch in the source code. So, definitely, I am not running into the same issue.
Of course, I'm not sure this fix even applies, as Archive_Tar doesn't use stream filters, which was the code I touched. More likely is that the zlib on your box is borked. I'd start by checking to make sure that it is version 1.2.3.3 by running php -i |grep Version The last 2 lines "Compiled Version 1.2.3.3" and "Linked Version 1.2.3.3" are the ones relevant to zlib. I found myself to be using zlib 1.2.3. Not, sure, if there is an issue with zlib 1.2.3 that I need to upgrade to 1.2.3.3. In any case, I will also investigate Archive/Tar.php to see if I can narrow down more on thisthanks a lot for your help. - Sriram
