PEAR and PHP versions

Is there a specific version of PHP with which PEAR modules should try to
be compatible. I'm planning on extending Net::Socket a little bit, but i
noticed that some of the PHP functions i'll need are only available in PHP
4.1 or higher. I will certainly wrapper the functions with a call to check
version one way or the other, but I was wondering if there were any set
guidelines in place?
