Cool. The PEAR installer is designed to work nicely with native package
systems, but I haven't tested it yet. I'll take a look and see if they
read my mind right. :-)

Pretty soon. The three packages that will remain in php4/pear are PEAR,
Console_Getopt and Archive_Tar. These are needed for the installer. In
addition, there are tarballs for other packages in php4/pear/packages
that are also installed during "make install", but I can add a configure
switch to disable installing these.

Really? Having \r\n is not good, but why should rpm care? Could add
crlf->lf conversion to the package command though.
