You may try to temporarily increase the default max size before setting the cell values. Set _xls_strmax to some higher value:
$yourworksheet->_xls_strmax = 255;
->
$yourworksheet->_xls_strmax = 300;
before you start filling cell values.
I don't know how this affects other functions. Please note that _xls_strmax is a "private" property and should not be changed from outside the class. I'm not a maintainer of this package but as it was ported from PERL's Spreadsheet::WriteExcel module, it may be an old version for earlier excel releases. Maybe this is the reason to have 255 as the max length of strings and simply increasing this number makes it possible to store longer strings in the cells.
