It seems that I found the problem: Finally I found this: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Problems_with_character_sets.html see "hard-coded constant 'c:\mysql\'" For me - the problem is solved when I copy my charsets folder to c:\mysql\share\charsets I hope for Win2000 it's the same ... Will test that tomorrow Setting "character-sets-dir" was a good hint as it finally made me find the solution but it did not help for me - maybe on php 4.3.4 or mySQL 4.1.x. Shall other people discuss whose fault it is (php or mySQL) - for me it is OK to have a copy of charsets in the desired place Regards Daniel
