First, no, I'm not using Debian. I'm on OS X (10.3.3). Second, the
--nocompress (-Z) has no effect. In fact, the zipd tarball gets
downloaded despite the option:
% pear -vvvvv install -Z Log
+ tmp dir created at /tmp/tmpJvhC5E
downloading Log-1.8.4.tgz ...
Starting to download Log-1.8.4.tgz (29,453 bytes)
.........done: 29,453 bytes
(hangs)
Third, there's no other details regarding the progress of install that I
can deduce.
When I look in the temporary directory, there is only the downloaded
tarball.
% ls -a /tmp/tmpJvhC5E
. .. Log-1.8.4.tgz
That would suggest that it might be hanging on a zlib decompression,
since the tarball isn't unpacked.
So I just unpacked it. I saw in the help for 'pear install' that I could
pass install the package.xml file, so I just did:
% pear install package.xml
Optional dependencies:
'sqlite' PHP extension is recommended to utilize some features
file docs/guide.txt in package.xml does not exist
That didn't work, so I take a look in package.xml. It refers to relative
files inside the Log-1.8.4 directory, so I just 'mv package.xml
Log-1.8.4' and try again:
% pear install package.xml
Optional dependencies:
'sqlite' PHP extension is recommended to utilize some features
install ok: Log 1.8.4
Success. A quick PHP test file proved that Log was installed correctly.
So this suggests that zlib is not functioning properly, but what the
problem is I cannot determine.
I followed PHP build instructions at
http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/php.html
and I installed
zlib v1.1.4, which means that libz.a is in /usr/local/lib.
I just now compiled the zlib example.c and it ran fine.
If anyone has suggestions, I'd be happy to give it a try. I'm surprised
that no other OS X users have experienced the same problem. At least I
have a workaround for now.
