Do not use preg solves your problem:

require_once 'HTML/Template/IT.php';
it = new HTML_Template_IT('./', array('use_preg'=>false));
$template = 'Total:{total}';$it->setTemplate($template);
$it->setVariable('total', '$100,000');
$it->show();
?>
preg are used by default (BC).
