You can distribute closed source apps based on PEAR as long as one of the following happens: 1.) If you do NOT make changes to the PEAR code and you simply use them you just need to make sure your clients get a.) the source to the PEAR packages (or a link) and b.) a copy of the appropriate license (again a link will work).
The link *should* be to your site, however. OpenZaurus recently hit a problem where they linked to the author's website for source code and the author's site went down. In this case, it's illegal to distribute the program until you make the source available somehow.
2.) If you DO make changes to the PEAR code (ie. you add a function) those changes must be made available. They don't have to be re-submitted to the PEAR community or anything like that. You'd just need to make your altered PEAR code freely available.
Yes, it just has to be available, it doesn't *have* to be re-submitted directly back to PEAR. However, the PEAR devs would appreciate patches for bug fixes and new features. It doesn't mean they'll necessarily get in, but it will make maintaining your PEAR code easier.
GPL does not apply here as, AFAIK, no PEAR code is licensed under the GPL (LGPL and PHP only AFAIK). --Joe On Nov 19, 2004, at 12:47 PM, Justin Patrin wrote:

People, I have a *doubt*. I can to commercialize an application that depends on a package of pear, one framework for example? Ex. My framework use Data_Object, HTML_QuickForm, HTML_Template_Sigma, etc. They are the base (like a kernel) of my FrameWork that it contains another classes (Page Class, PopUp Class, Menu Class, etc). I can commercialize it since that under the license of the PHP, GPL, etc? Jacques, from Brazil.

You cannot include GPLed code in a closed source commercial application. You *can* include PHP or LGPLed code in a closed source commercial application as long as you give all of your changes to the PEAR code back to the PEAR community. If you're distributing the application you also have to host the PEAR code you used and allow users to download the source. -- Justin Patrin

They see, My framework use Data_Object, HTML_QuickForm, HTML_Template_Sigma, etc. They are the base (like a kernel) of my FrameWork that it contains another classes (Page Class, PopUp Class, Menu Class, etc). 1 - This (the framework like a Horde that use PEAR) can will be licensed under PHP license? What I need to do this? 2 - I want that the framework (that have PEAR code and My Code) will be *open source and free*. 3 - The optional applications that use (derivatives of) framework *will be open source BUT have a cost* (developer, maintenance, etc). Ex. User Admin, Query Tool, Help Desk... 4 - The user can choose a package with or without optional applications and developed your proper applications, if want. 5 - The pear PART of code into framework *it could not be modified under no hypothesis for me and for the users of app derivatives of the framework. *6 - It (the framework) will have a link to http://pear.php.net (with logo). I hope that you understanding me. Jacques, from Brazil. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.289 / Virus Database: 265.3.1 - Release Date: 15/11/2004
