right i can send the error message when i get back monday, i only ever
wanted to start off with the db class i copied over DB.php PEAR.php and put
them into a pear dir and then i copied over mysql.php and put that in the DB
dir within the pear dir , i have checked that this works in php 4.3 , my
work is running php3 which needs a serious upgrade soon hopefully, but i
prefer the db abstraction class over anything else , i guess i have to write
my own ? i dont really need the installer just those 3 files to work

Nope. Not possible. I´m unsure on what´s the minimum version for just
the PEAR base classes to run, but I´d expect it to be 4.0.6 or even
4.1.0. The PEAR installer wasn´t fully functional before 4.2.3 and will
not be officially released until the (imminent) release of 4.3.0.
If you want something remotely like PEAR for PHP3, use PHPLib - then
again, PHPLib is just a base framework for session management, database
abstraction, authentication and form generation and lacks many of the
more interesting packages that PEAR offers.
