Indeed, if Metabase works on PHP3, that´s probably the best way to go,
especially as there´s MDB in PEAR which offers a Metabase API wrapper,
so when you decide to switch to a more recent PHP version and use PEAR,
you should quite easily be able to switch to MDB without much hassle.
You´re of course right when you say...:

...but still, you won´t even be able to use the DB package standalone
with PHP3. When I started using PEAR::DB (must have been somewhere in
early 2001) the minimum requirement was PHP 4.0.4PL1 already - I would
assume that the minimum required version got even higher in the
meantime.
