You are doing nothing wrong at all.
The format wasn't chosen arbitrarily, but instead to require changes to
the string as seldom as possible. Both MySQL (when using date, time and
datetime) and PostGreSQL use the same format as MDB does. So there needs
to be no conversion. This may not be the case for other RDBMS however.
