Frank recently added a first version of a frontbase driver. He also
intents on writing an MSSQL driver.

I have used Metabase. Didn't like the API and also found that it is
needlessly slow mainly due to the fact that it still supports PHP3
(which I don't need). The performance is acceptable however, but I
really didn't like the API at all.

Odd. He usually is very responsive.

Well theoretically DataObjects should work with MDb through the PEAR DB
wrapper. Other than that it should not be too hard to make Dataobjects
MDB compatible as the APIs of PEAR DB and MDB are really similar.
