I've been looking at the Metabase project whilst MDB doesn't have MSSQL support (anybody got an idea how long until it appears?). I wondering how many of you actually have used Metabase and/or Metastorage. I've been trying to contact the author, Manuel Lemos but his email account inbox is full! :-(
Sorry, due to a configuration mistake I was flooded with over 3000 messages in my mailbox. That must have happened while you mailed me. You can mail me now as the mailbox was clear several hours ago.
Is there any plan to get DataObjects working with pear::mdb anytime soon? Does anybody know of any other working/good SQL Query builder classes - I'd really like to make use of one with Metabase/MDB if possible.
Keep in mind that the point of Metastorage is to generate compact code that does all abstraction for you. Currently it generates Metabase based code, but the goal is to render all database abstraction packages obsolete as it will be generating only the necessary to code that deals with the underlying database using the native database client API calls instead of calls to database abstraction package. The result is that the generated code will be much more compact, as it will only do what your data objects need, and will be much faster as there is no database abstraction package call overhead. So, if your application data objects are only stored in MS SQL, the generate code for the persistence classes will only use MS SQL PHP API function calls. The step ahead is to generate code that executes database optimized stored procedure functions to achieve raw speed. I have mentioned some points about this in Frankfurt's PHP Conference 2001 regarding meta-meta-programming database procedure language module for MetaL, but then the plan was not so clear as it is now: http://www.meta-language.net/metal/31_3.html For now Metastorage generates Metabase based code. So, in theory (not tested yet) MDB with Metabase API wrapper will work with Metastorage generated code. Meanwhile I will be making it generate direct to driver object calls instead of Metabase global functions. For now, MDB does not provide wrappers for these, but Lukas is aware of the problem. Bottom line, regardless whatever database abstraction package you use now with Metastorage generated code, database abstraction package will become obsolete. It is just a matter of time. In the end the code generated by Metastorage will very efficient in terms of compactness and performance, thus pleasing all those that lookup for productivity gains in database appplication development and performance of the application code. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
