ITX Error Handling

I'm just starting out using HTML_Template_ITX and am having some difficulty with
handling errors.
I've read through some mailing list threads and they say that the ITX code
returns PEAR errors, but it doesn't seem to be working.
It looks like it throws all errors into the err array...
So what is the standard way of checking for errors?
