GD bundled is not the official GD. It is better maintained and well
integrated with php

Many apps around uses PEAR and bundled the required package as
convenience. Users like to untar and go ;). In preference to run across
the web for dependencies, even if 'web' is only pear :).
But I'm not fan of all bundled if no changes have been done.
