Why "w"'s displayed on upgrade

Hi,
everytime I upgrade or upgrade-all my pear I get out put like the
following:

Release Warnings
================
w
w
downloading PEAR-1.2.tgz ...
...done: 83,109 bytes
---
The more packages are upgraded the more "2 times w"'s I get.
I guess I asked this already a while ago, but there was no reaction on
that, I am afraid.
So, another try.
Is this a but, a feature, a quirck of the installer or a faulty
installation on my hosts?
