pear 1.4.0a12 for windows?

Hi,
I am a PHP developer who wishes to download and install the latest version
of PEAR for windows XP.
I was able to download PEAR 1.4.0a12 from the PEAR website pretty easily,
but I am having a hard time installing it for windows.
The Windows installation instructions indicate to run go-pear.php from the
go-pear.org website, which is what I've done.
But, when I do that, it downloads and installs the latest "stable" version
which is PEAR 1.3.5
I then tried to use the pear CLI to install a specific package, but it was
like going around in circles since when I type:
pear install PEAR-1[1].4.0a12.tgz, it says the package is already installed
- but it is PEAR 1.3.5 that is installed and not the latest alpha version.
Please help!
