Hi Daniel,
Thank you very much for your quick reply. I tried what you suggested and
got the following message:
--------------
xml_rpc_client: Connection to RPC server pear.php.net:80 failed. The
operation completed successfully.
--------------
I'm not sure where to even start debugging this. Could it be a problem on
my end given that I've been experimenting so much, I may have changed some
configuration settings that ultimately led to this? Could it be a problem
with having a firewall on my computer that is preventing the connection?
Unlikely, given that the original download for PEAR 1.3.5 seemed to work
fine. Something else?
Any pointers you may have are greatly appreciated.
Thank you once again,
Khaled

Now that you have 1.3.5 installed, use the following command to upgrade to
1.4.0xxx:
pear upgrade PEAR-alpha
That will force the installer to override default protections against
installing alpha or beta software.
