Quoting Wez Furlong <kingwez@gmail.com>:
GPL will infect the code you write and thus make it GPL too. Normally we say "no" to this kind of thing, but then we have this: http://viewcvs.php.net/viewcvs.cgi/pecl/smbc/, which is the "same" as your effort.OK, so by "infecting", do you mean the use of libsmbclient symbol names in my smbclient.c file? Does that make this a derivative work and not something that merely uses the functionality of the GPL'd work? Forgive me if I don't understand these restrictions in publishing this work with PECL. I also don't have a problem publishing this work elsewhere under whatever license, even if it must be under the GPL. I just figured the PECL site would be a good place to start.
A bit of a tricky situation. However, my friend Luke (hi Luke!) recently announced that a lot of his Samba related code is now available under a do-what-you-like license. Maybe this covers smbclient, or maybe (if you ask him really really really nicely; he's really busy) he can conjure up something we can use without RMS and his gang attacking the PHP project. --Wez.If you're worried about attacks on the PHP project over things like this, I understand. I also was not aware of that CVS project. It looks quite old. Perhaps I could still collaborate with the author of that module. BTW Wez, great tutorial PDF, it helped me out a lot on this extension. :) Adam
