Not to discourage you from writing an imlib2 extension but given your needs as
outlined by your message it would seem imagick (php extensions for
ImageMagick library) would be a better tool for the job. The ImageMagick
library is especially suited for image conversion, sizing and manipulation
and support a tremendous amount of format. The extensions itself is also
being fairly actively developed.
