Gareth, Not to discourage you from writing an imlib2 extension but given your needs as outlined by your message it would seem imagick (php extensions for ImageMagick library) would be a better tool for the job. The ImageMagick library is especially suited for image conversion, sizing and manipulation and support a tremendous amount of format. The extensions itself is also being fairly actively developed.
Imagemagick is all well and good - and indeed we do use it to some degree[0], but well, it just doesnt' cut it as far as speed goes. That's the only reason for looking for something else that we've got, but it's an increadibly major one. Anyway, I got bored last night and finished the imlib2 extension I was writing :) I'll do a bit more bug testing and clean-ups on it, and then chuck it up somewhere for people to grab should they so desire. [0] we've got a wrapper class that grabs the mime_type of a file, compares it against an associative array of allowed file types, and then works out which classfile to include(), so for wierd formats like psd, we'll bring in the imagick class wrapper, otherwise we'll use imlib2 for the speed gain. Provided the function names in the classes around the imlib/imagick extensions are the same, take the same arguments and return the same things, this keeps life nice and easy for us.
