Well, I didn't change my setup and configuring with --with-imap didn't work as
the configure script told me to use --with-imap-ssl 'as my IMAP lib seemed to
had been compiled with SSL support' (for info, I build imap with default
options: makefile neb)'.

Yes, this is plain php-4.0.7RC1.tar.gz downloaded on php.net/~zend following
the announcement on php-dev@.
I hadn't built PHP since 4.0.6 though so I believe many things have changed
since.

Yes, there's a link in lib/lib because it was very hard to have consistent
paths for both headers and libs. I already reported this with PHP 3.0.x but,
well, it's been working flawlessly for years now.

Yes, I believe so and I've been building nightly snapshots every week for more
than a year with the same setup until 4.0.6 where I took some vacation. :)
