If you haven't been following the discussions here, there are plans to have
a database abstraction layer in PEAR, a PHP code repository still up to be
built. It has been said it is going to be a basic thing, so I suspect that
it won't completely handle the differences between all the DBMS.
Anyway, it is something still being developed. If you are looking for
something that it is ready for use now, completely handles the DBMS
differences and it has been developed and well tested for over a year,
maybe you would like to try this PHP package named Metabase:
