OK; thanks.
A copy of my original problem description:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=php4beta&m=95263601832672&w=2
Basicly, my php.ini looked like this:
java.library=/usr/local/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so
java.library.path=/usr/local/jre/lib/i386/classic:/usr/local/jre/lib/i386/native_threads:/usr/local/jre/lib/i386:/usr/lib/apache
java.class.path=/usr/local/jre/lib/rt.jar:/usr/local/jre/lib/i18n.jar:/usr/lib/apache/php_java.jar:/home/httpd/java
extension=libphp_java.so
The settings were guided by the Sun/Blackdown part of php4/ext/java/README
where it the example says:
java.library=/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so
java.library.path=/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/i386/classic:/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/i386/native_threads:/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/i386:/var/tmp/work/php4/modules
java.class.path=/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/rt.jar:/usr/local/lib/jdk1.2/jre/lib/i18n.jar:/var/tmp/work/php4/modules/php_java.jar
extension_dir=/var/tmp/work/php4/modules
extension=libphp_java.so
As I mentioned in my original posting, I tried both Sun's and Blackdowns
latest JDK/JRE 1.2.2 releases for Linux.

If I use the following java.library setting, it still doesn't work (i.e.,
still need to prefix my "httpd" command with LD_PRELOAD-stuff):
java.library=/usr/local/jre/lib/i386/classic/libjvm.so
Actually, it doesn't seem to matter what I put in the java.library line.
If it formulate it as follows (but remember the LD_PRELOAD stuff), things work:
java.library=whatever.so
I have verified that PHP parses my php.ini (by changing values like track_vars
and checking with phpinfo() afterwards).
Is it a simple matter of me understanding the README right or does something
seem to be wrong?
