Progress update: I've progressed to the point where the PHP will actually
load, but will die early in execution when configured for the Sun JDK 1.2.2
on RedHat Linux 6.1. I've tracked down the failure to being in the call to
getservbyname in php_mysql. This is clearly an innocent victim -
presumably the problem is that the shared libraries delivered with the Sun
JDK are somehow incompatible with some portion of the base TCP/IP ones.
I'm currently working on a minimal test case that I plan to submit to Sun.
Meanwhile, I would recommend the IBM JDK 1.1.8.
