Ok, Do this with a fresh newly downloaded copy of php-4.0RC1.tar.gz 1. Untar it. with "tar xvfz php-4.0RC1.tar.gz" 2. go to the directory. "cd php-4.0RC1" 3. go get the tomcat binary tarball from jakarta.apache.org 4. Untar it with "tar xvfz jakarta-tomcat.tar.gz" 5. Rename the servlet.jar to jsdk.jar "cp tomcat/lib/servlet.jar tomcat/lib/jsdk.jar" 6. Run configure "./configure --prefix=/opt/php --with-java=<your jdk directory here> --with-servlet=<insert your tomcat path here>" 7. Run make 8. Copy the phpsrvlt.jar to ext/java "cp sapi/servlet/phpsrvlt.jar ext/java/php_java.jar" 9. Create a lib directory in /opt/php "mkdir -p /opt/php/lib" 10. Run "make install" 11. Include the jar file phpsrvlt.jar in your classpath. 12. Look at the web.xml in "sapi/servlet/web.xml" to understand how to set up the servlet environment for the servlet.
