Because I also run the module (I use cgi for when I need suexec) I did:
AddType php-script .phpx
Action php-script /cgi-bin/php
But you can use whatever extentions you like
AddType php-script .phpx
AddType php-script .asp
AddType php-script .php3
AddType php-script .php
AddType php-script .php4
AddType php-script .phtml
Action php-script /cgi-bin/php
