That is exactly what made me asked. I was reading the mod_rewrite
manual and because of
http://www.apache.de/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html
``The great thing about mod_rewrite is it gives you all
the configurability and flexibility of Sendmail. The
downside to mod_rewrite is that it gives you all the
configurability and flexibility of Sendmail.''

I was warned and had my barf bag ready. It just plain
sucks coding conditionals with single letter line noise
characters and watch out for implicit loops and loop
shortcuts. If you want to do procedural application of
matching patterns, you should use a proper, turing complete
language with a syntax the human mind can handle.
And if you happen to have such a language on board, as you
have with mod_php, you should make good use of it instead
of hacking conditionals that look like tty failures.
