Zeev,
Just because one uses OpenSource tools does not mean they ascribe to
OpenSource ideals at all. In fact, it just makes them GREEDY and worse than
such institutions as Microsoft.
Example:
OpenSource - All Software should be open/free.
Microsoft - All Software should be closed/proprietary.
Companies like Amazon - Your software should be open/free. Ours should be
closed/proprietary.
To me the last is the worst kind of hypocrisy. I feel trying to patent "one
click shopping" shows their true mentality and nature.
I obviously know that not everyone takes OpenSource to this extent, but I
really see no need for closed/proprietary software at all.
I am glad they see the power of PHP/Apache and are using it, but I still do
not believe that makes supporting them a good idea.
A much more valid counterpoint would have been:
So do you boycott everyone who is not openSource in principal?
My answer:
If there is a viable alternative to their product. YES..
And quite frankly I am ashamed to say I compromise in situations where there
is not an OpenSource alternative.
As neither fatbrain nor B & N have an openSource stance.
If it makes any difference. PHP is still my favorite language and I will be
buying the book. :) So if you have a B&N or FatBrain link that gets you
more money. Please post it or email it and I will gladly use it. :)
