(I'm assuming its suppose to be PHP3_EXT_DES_CRYPT, since FBSD > crypt uses a 9 char salt.) This occured for me when configuring php4 with IMAP. Alas imap-uw is installing its client library as 'libc-client4.a' in /usr/local/lib but 'configure' is looking for libc-client.a. That's the reason why configure fails to determine the crypt capabilities: it can not compile the crypt test code (at least). See your config.log and make sure all the named libraries are really accessible by this name. If needed sym link them to the name php4 want. This should be covered by configure, shouldn't it? ciao, Bernhard -- pgpPublicKey: http://www.geo.tu-freiberg.de/~fuerst/pgpPublicKey.txt
