So my initial response to "what if I don't want to auto focus" was that it
wouldn't hurt your experience to have the field focused.
I understand the use of the keyboard for scrolling wouldn't be possible if
the field was auto focused. However, if you just made it the first option
to tab to that would be almost as good as an auto focus in my opinion. I
just want to be able to get to the field without having to move my hand
over to the mouse every time I come to the site.
One thing to think about is that IF the population that wants the field
auto focused is greater than those that don't, we could auto focus the
field and then the smaller percentage that didn't want it focused because
of their keyboard page scrolling could just tab out of it since their hands
are on the keyboard already. either way, it would just mean tabbing to the
field, or tabbing out of it.
Thoughts?
