Firstly, I believe these 'php2' & 'php3' are the temoprary file names
that php uses itself for uploaded files. Obviously:
if not exist php2 then temp_file == php2 else
temp_file == php3 if also not exist else
else try last php + 1 until dest not exist
Secondly, baffling isn't it? I tried to prototype code from the php
maual and hade the same problems you did.
Thirdly, the answer. Try going to http://zend.com/search.php
and search for 'upload binary mysql' and there is some code there.
You can mod this to not need the sql server and just to upload to
your h/disk
