Apache-Win-PHP 500 Internal Error but page served

Trying to get stand-alone Windows/Apache/PHP configuration to test site before putting it live. All seems to be running well, apart from Apache is giving status 500 Internal Server Error for PHP pages. I can't find any other error messages. I would welcome assistance in tracking down the cause of this problem.
